How to prepare your home for a renovation

Before work starts, clear the rooms involved, agree the scope in writing, and decide where dust barriers and floor protection go. Sort parking, waste and access early. Tell your neighbours the dates. Being ready on day one saves more time than anything that happens later in the job.

What should I do first?

Agree exactly what is being done, in writing. A clear scope prevents most disputes and lets you compare quotes on equal terms.

How do I prepare the rooms?

Empty is best.

  • Move furniture, ornaments and anything breakable out.
  • Take down curtains, blinds, pictures and shelves.
  • Lift loose rugs and clear the route in from the door.
  • Set aside a space for materials and tools.

What about dust?

Dust travels. Sealed doorways, floor protection and closed internal doors keep most of it in one place, but expect some cleaning afterwards regardless.

Do I need to sort parking and waste?

In Edinburgh, yes. Controlled parking and permits affect vans and deliveries, and skips on the street need council permission. Agree who arranges what before the start date.

Should I tell my neighbours?

It helps, especially in a tenement where the stair is shared. A short note about dates and working hours prevents most complaints.

Can I live in the house during the work?

Often yes for a single room, harder for a whole-house refit. Plan a working kitchen or bathroom somewhere, or a stay elsewhere for the disruptive stage.

What should the quote include?

The work covered, what is excluded, and who supplies materials. We give a free, no-obligation written quote. The price we quote is the price you pay.
